Ogawa Coffee Lab

Small coffee shop with unique minimalistic “still in construction” aesthetic

Intro – A minimalistic coffee shop with a menu of 30+ coffee beans. The menu allowed us to order the beans as a pourover, espresso +/- milk (hot/iced), and an Aeropress (hot/iced). They also offered 100g bag of beans for each coffee available.

What we ordered

  • Ethiopia Tade Natural (left) – I ordered this as a pour over. He went to his cabinet of beans and carefully measured out my selection, grinded it, and thoughtfully brewed it in a V shaped brewer. It wasn’t as acidic and bright as a typical natural Ethiopian. I wish the berry flavors were more punchy and apparent. It was berry-like fruitiness and sweet overshadowed by a slight nutty roasted profile. Rating 7.2/10
  • Iced latte with the House Blend (right) – The milk was carefully measured out which I appreciated. Japanese milk might just hit different. No sugar was added and it was so creamy and sweet. It was still too much milk relative to espresso for my taste. It tasted like an elegant iced latte with no bitterness or astringency in sight. Rating 7.6/10

Conclusion – it a cool experience being able to pick which beans you wanted and having it brewed your preferred way. The selection was amazing, service was great, and the items on for sale were cool. Coffee is really subjective so maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I picked a different bean. If I was in the area I would probably return and try an espresso that would have highlighted more acidity and fruitiness.

Overall Rating 7.3/10
