Hakkone Gyoza

Small mom and pop Gyoza shop by the Hakkone Open Air Museum

Intro – A mom and pop shop right next to the Open Air Museum. They take cash only and specialize in gyoza. There was no wait when we came

Ambiance – Casual

What we ordered

  • Classic gyoza (bottom) – this was a pork and cabbage gyoza. The gyoza wrapper was the thinnest I’ve ever had and it was so so tender with a lightly crispy fried bottom. The filling felt like mostly cabbage so it wasn’t as juicy as a heavy pork gyoza. The dipping sauce was a great balance of soy sauce and vinegar, nothing special. Rating 8.1/10
  • Shrimp and Pork Gyoza (middle) – this was around just as good as the classic. I wish there was more meat and shrimp flavor. You would enjoy it if you liked delicate seafood flavors. Rating 7.9/10
  • Deep Fried Gyoza (top) – this was likely using a different thicker wrapper and their classic filling. It was a think crunchy crust was was dressed with some sort of light dashi and soy sauce glaze thickened to a consistency similar to American-Chinese orange chicken. It was served with mayonnaise as the dipping sauce. I enjoyed this one the most. It was really crunchy and the sauce gave it extra flavor as it soaked into the wrapper. Mayo was the perfect dipping sauce for this. Rating 8.2/10

Conclusion – It’s a nice spot to try some traditional gyoza if you’re visiting the Open Air Museum. There’s not much else walking distance from the museum.

Overall Rating 8.1/10
