Gonpachi Tori Nemaki

A casual handroll bar

Intro – A bar-top sit-down sushi restaurant offering mainly handrolls

Ambiance – casual/elevated casual

What we ordered

  • Japanese Highball – subtle Japanese whiskey, great amount of effervescence, beautiful ice cubes. Rating 7.0/10
  •  Kaarage – the only flavors apparent were salt and pepper. Good level of salt but wish there was more garlic or ginger. A squeeze of lemon or sauce on the side would have been nice. Not that crispy but quite juicy. Not much better than karrage from 7-11. Rating 6.2/10

  • 5 Set of Handrolls – All rolls were served with a notably high-quality piece of seaweed on the side and all fillings were on a perfect piece of butter lettuce to be assembled by us. This allowed the seaweed to remain as crispy as possible from the first bite to the last.
    • Cajun Chicken – Cajun spice on a hand roll was very unique. A little spicy and smoky complemented by the tender creamy julienned chicken. The chicken was a little dry. Rating – 7.3/10 – Spicy Tuna – creamy and fatty spicy tuna on top of a shisho leaf to support all the flavors and add herbal complexity. The julienned cucumbers added a pop of freshness and extra crunch contrasting the creaminess. Rating 7.8/10
    • Korean beef and kimchi – classic Korean flavors of sweet marinated Bulgogi, served as thinly sliced lean beef on top of shisho and topped with kimchi. Tasted like a something you can assemble at an average KBBQ spot. Rating 7.5/10
    • Ebi Tempura- tempura fried shrimp with rice. Simple but it had a beautiful contrast of crispy top and softer bottom of the tempura that touched the rice. Glazed with a sweet sticky shoyu that brought so much umami, this was one of the better bites of tempura I’ve had. Rating 7.8/10
    • Avocado Salmon – salmon loin served with a generous slice of avocado. Both united to bring an extremely creamy and fatty bite of sushi. The texture was great and did a good job supporting it while not overpowering the flavor of the salmon. Rating 7.9/10
    • Toro handroll – this was an add-on piece of sushi for ~ $3.50. Good price for toro, just served on top of rice. Nice and fatty tuna, equally creamy as the salmon and avocado. The fattiness rounded out the typical salinity of tuna. Rating 8.3/10

Conclusion – A nice casual spot to eat at if you’re craving hand rolls. They offered a unique variety of hand rolls so it’s hard to get bored of your meal. Each ingredient was of great quality, and assembled with great thoughtfulness.

Overall rating 7.3/10
