Gion Duck Noodles

Viral Duck Ramen Shop w/ emojis for a menu

Intro – A very popular duck ramen shop with a simple menu explained by emojis. Usually, the wait is supposed to be over an 1 or 2 but in the middle of September at around 7pm we got in after 30 mins.

Ambience – Casual, Cozy, Homey

What we Ordered

  • Kyoto Style Lager – Looks like a brewery made this just for the shop because it has the signature duck emoji in front. Tasted like a classic lager, nothing special, crisp and went well with the meal. Rating 7.0/10
  • Duck Ramen with 3 pieces of breast and 2 pieces of thighs and an egg – The broth was really clean, not gamey at all, but very clearly duck. Not a lot of apparent aromatics standing out and salt is on the lower end. The meat was cooked perfectly, really tender and great fat cap. The breast is slightly more meaty than the thigh but both were great options. I would recommend giving both a try. I preferred the thigh because I usually like ramen meat to be a fatty treat. The plating was beautiful with sancho pepper powder on the rim. I just typically like ramens closer tonkostu style with a creamy broth so this more clean broth ramen is just not for me. Rating 7.3/10

  • Duck Tsukemen with 3 pieces of breast and 2 pieces of thighs, an egg, with orange sauce and truffle add on – My wife ordered this but I tried a little and it seemed a little better than the ramen. However, the broth is not as rich as either of us would like for tsukemen. I love the innovation with the orange sauce and foam, paying homage to the classic flavors of duck l’orange. Plating again was just immaculate but the flavor intensity was just not what we liked. Rating 7.5/10

Conclusion – The shop provided a unique experience to try duck ramen. It’s a cool experience and the attention to detail is amazing. I just wouldn’t wait more than 30 minutes for it or go out of my way for it.

Overall Rating 7.4/10
