A popular sandwich shop known for using a huge fried cutlet of pork
Intro – There’s a few places around Japan that were gaining traction on Instagram for using huge cutlets of pork. I came across this place in planning our itinerary and wanted to see what the hype was about.
Ambiance – Take out only shop on a small street with a very friendly owner
What we Ordered
- Original Pork Cutlet Sandwich – It was indeed a huge cutlet between 2 pieces of very soft Japanese milk bread. The cutlet itself was a hit or miss, depending on where you took your bite. There were spots on the cutlet with great marbling and fat and some spots that were very lean. The cutlet felt more lean than fatty, resulting in most of the cutlet feeling dry and lackluster. The sauce was a classic katsu sauce but there just simply wasn’t enough for this giant cutlet. It was seasoned well but the cutlet being this big was prone to very overcooked edges, leading to dryness and unsatisfying texture. It was also just hard to bite and unpleasant to eat. It was nice that it came with dessert which was deep fried leftover bread coated in sugar but those were not that great either. It was too crunchy and greasy and not sweet enough. Rating 6.4/10
Conclusion – This spot will not do the giant cutlet justice. It just was simply way too lean and dry, and also really hard to eat in the context of a sandwich. I would rather have a cutlet in the context of a rice bowl with sauce on the side. This also made me realized that there’s no reason to have a cutlet this big other than for virality. It just makes more sense to fry a thinner cutlet for more even cooking and thus juiciness.
