Loose Kyoto

Small and cute cafe near Kiyomizu-dera

Intro – We walked by this cute shop on the way to Kiyomizu-dera. We saw the cute donuts and had to stop by to try some

Ambiance – Minimal “concrete” aesthetic

What We Ordered

Left to Right – Matcha, Hojicha, Custard Donut

  • Matcha Donut – Getting a matcha flavor is a no-brainer. First of all, the texture of the donut was amazing. It reminded me of Trish’s Donuts on Pier 39 in San Francisco. They were crispy on the outside, and tender and almost cake-like on the inside. I’m not a big fan of matcha but it was still good. The matcha flavor was more mild but it was very creamy. I wish it could have been sweeter but that’s just my Western palate talking. Rating 7.3/10
  • Hojicha Donut – The Hojicha flavor was much more apparent than the matcha. There was an astringent finish that tea lovers would enjoy. There could have been even more sweetness to curb the astringency because I was looking for a dessert, not a cup of tea. However, the cream balanced the astringency well, and I still liked the flavor. Rating 7.4/10
  • Custard Donut The custard was the least flavorful of them all. It was a little egg-y with a hint of vanilla and not very sweet at all. The texture was a great whipped custard consistency, very light. I just would have liked more flavor overall. Rating 6.8/10

Conclusion – The shop and the donuts were really cute. These donuts made the cafe stand out and I respect it. They aren’t amazing donuts and we wouldn’t stop by unless we were visiting Kiyomizu-dera. They had the texture down but I would have just wanted it sweeter. If you like desserts not too sweet, you should give it a shot!
